I have admired Samsonite overnight bags for some time. A number of years ago I think that the company had suffered. For a short time the company's eye(!) for quality was not what it used to be and IME, the standard of Samsonite's goods was going downhill. HOWEVER, now I think they are tops although they are not the cheapest overnight bag maker.

Thanks, Alex! I had my last class session yesterday. I'm just studying for boards now and finalizing job stuff. It's really good to be done.

I will definitely be making an announcement over here the day CC launches to get people to go subscribe. I won't actually be dropping the Cowry Catchers episodes here, though, because I don't want to mix adult and young adult content on the same feed.

You can subscribe to Cowry Catchers right now if you want! www.cowrycatchers.com It's not searchable in iTunes yet (because I haven't submitted it), but you can still use iTunes as a feedcatcher. Just hit the orange "Subscribe to Posts" button at the top right, and there's a "Subscribe with iTunes" option.

In the meantime, I plan to continue doing occasional short stories over here on the Prophet feed involving that set of characters. I'll probably keep doing that as long as I'm having fun and can make time for it.

Hi Abbie,
great to have you back! And congrats for finishing your training! I am so looking forward to CC and maybe some extra content to make the waiting a little less hard ;-)
Are you going to post new content on the Prophet iTunes feed or are you going to make a new one for CC? I don't want to miss a thing...

Thank you, Mary! :) Writing the short stories is fun. I'll keep doing it until it stops being fun. Heh.

The video trailer for CC - Yeah, it's mostly just a curiosity, because trailers for books really haven't caught on. The audio promos, on the other hand, certainly will be used, and I spent a lot more work on them. I've got three lengths posted now. Check 'em out: http://cowrycatchers.com/?page_id=16

p.s.
The trailer was cool, if a little confusing, as you yourself admitted. Those kind of things are really difficult to write!
And the word 'exile' doesn't contain a c.
No insult intended!

Abigail,
Just read the Gabalon short story, and I really enjoyed it. It humanizes Archemedes (sp?) in such agreat way, and really enriches the whole story, even considering how short it was. It was just right.
I've listened to all of your podcast stories so far and have enjoyed every minute.
I'm excitedly awaiting your next podcast tale!
Sincerely,
Mary Laura

Oh, I did! I mean, it's in the audio. I recorded this between packing and cleaning my apartment for the friend who's staying there. I edited the audio on the plane, and I posted it through a haze of exhaustion from my parent's house yesterday evening. I don't have time to list the sources, but they're in the audio. Hughes and I forgot to mention Eliot, and I forgot to record an addendum, which is why I stuck it in the notes.

Thanks, Jack. I was surprised not to find the list more readily available after the awards. The finalist list was all over the place, the winners not so much.

Aw, thank you, Lis! That's a huge compliment! :) I'll probably read and respond to it on the podcast. I do understand what you're saying about single voice vs full cast audio. From my point of view, it's also much easier to do a solo read. The process of collecting and combining audio is very involved, and it never sounds the same as people recording in the same room.

However, for Cowry Catchers, I really do think it will be more immersive with voice actors. The protagonist is an adult male, and its a story about sailors, so there are a lot of guys. There are some erotic scenes from a male point of view, and I think my voice would throw people out of the story. I really like the way Chris Lester and J.D. Sawyer have done their audio, and that's the effect I'm aiming for.

Other stuff: One of the most common complaints I had about Prophet was that people had a hard time remembering who was who. Cowry Catchers doesn't have quite as many characters, but I still think voice actors will prevent listeners from becoming confused. Also, there are real advantages to involving other podcasters in a project. Those people have their own audiences. The fact that a podcaster thought enough of my story to volunteer large amounts of time to help out is an endorsement and does bring listeners.

Anyway, I know that some people will still wish I'd done it solo. I'd be curious to hear what you think after you listen to Book 1 of CC.

I finished Panamindorah book III last week and am finally visiting your website! I so enjoyed the trilogy and am excited for Cowry Catchers to launch. However, when I listened to the preview I was actually disappointed that you had voice actors rather than reading through in your voice. Voice acted audiobooks never seem to flow as well as read. I would love to listen to a version author-read. Either way, my I got my boyfriend hooked on book I and he should be caught up in time to listen with me in December! =)

Thanks for reading my review on air, highlight of my week!

Also thanks for the podcast reqs, I subscribed to a few of them and am really enjoying Quarter Share, though its listed in reverse order so its a bit annoying having to choose each episode. The Onion was another good find.

Not only unscripted, but we say things I have to cut, and then we're still laughing about them when we cut back in, so people are like, "What is so funny?"

Poems - very occasionally, mostly sonnets. The ones that are even half good are tucked away in a back corner of my website where people don't usually go (this is by design). They're not about fantasy or science-fiction, though.

Aw! I actually stumbled twice because I knew that I knew two names for you (say that ten times fast), and I was trying to remember what I was supposed to say.

These dialogues with Hughes aren't exactly scripted.

Yea, I suppose the editing and splicing of each actors part adds time, especially when there is a conversation.

You're welcome, Bryan! I was pleased with how the story came together, and I'm delighted that you enjoyed it. :D

It is amazing how much time music and sound affects add to the overall production. This is basically how I'm doing Cowry Catchers, too, except that it has separate voice actors. It's a lot more work than a solo reader without effects, but it's also a lot more fun.

Thanks, Alex. I had someone just today speak of keynote in glowing terms. Sounds interesting. I've never owned a Mac (and, in fact, used other MP3 players for years; I wasn't sold on the iPod until the last couple of years). I probably will buy a Mac someday when I have an income again. My iPhone has more or less grown into an in separatble 5th appendage in the 2 months I've had it, so obviously they're making good stuff.

Until then, my Thinkpad has served me well.

Abbie, if you are using a Mac and want to have more freedom in creating the video you could as well try to make something similar in Keynote. Then you have complete control over everything and there are great animations/effects in the program (unlike Powerpoint). Files can also be exported as videos. Just a suggestion if you don't want to mess around/invest too much time in video editing software. I even think that one can download a trial version from the Apple site.
I made some videos to be displayed between speakers at a conference and it looked professional.
Alex
(BTW: I am not affiliated with Apple ;-)

Thanks, Alex! I agree that the music ends abruptly. Unfortunately, Animoto (though cooler than anything I can presently do for myself) is partially automated, and I can't directly control where the music ends. I can manipulate it indirectly, though.

I really like the video, the only thing I'd change (apart from what you want to do - i.e. adding voices) is to not let the music fade out at the end but rather have it end with some musical "bang".

Oh, thanks, guys! Hughes and I babbled on for over an hour. I'm about 3/4 done with cutting it down to a reasonable length, but not quite finished. The drawing is at the beginning, so people who want to shut us off after that can do so. Anyway, I'll finishing it tomorrow. Thanks for dropping by!

You know, I think the bubbliness of the streaming players seems to only be a problem on Firefox, and only on Firefox on a PC. I use Firefox on my mac and the files play fine. At work I checked on a PC, Explorer played fine, but Firefox did the bubbly thing. That's a real mystery. I wonder how we can solve that.

Loved the story! I even got watery eyes at the scene where Lexis saved the wolflings - even though it was already mentioned in the Prophet. Alex

Gail - Thank you! Yeah, I was impressed that Dunesteef team picked up on that. Most people focus on Lexis's weird family dynamics, but the story also underscores the way that the wolves (dogs) have interacted with their humanoid companions (they went down with them), as opposed to the cats, who got rid of their humanoid companions a long time ago. Heh. Naturally, the wolves and cats do not get along.

About the mic - I'll send you an email.

It has been a Panamindorah kind of day here, between this new episode (hi, Nim!) and the new Dunesteef episode. Very enjoyable.
If it hadn't been for the Dunesteef commentary, I would have totally missed that their story was about cats and dogs. Completely.

Just speaking hypothetically, if I were to buy equipment in order to be a voice actor, what might I get? The promised (Skype) headset has not appeared, and could be lost.

Saddens me a bit that the story is more or less over. Episodes jump to the front of my listening queue when I-tunes brings them down, to the point where I didn't wait fro my "morning" commute this afternoon, but instead listened to it over breakfast and dishes.

Thanks for the great story.

Hello! I just found your novels about a week ago, and, as this was the first update I had to wait for, I wanted to let you know how much it made my day on Friday. I love this story, I love your narration, and I can't wait for next week's installment. (As an aside, I love your narration so much that I'm forcing myself to listen to it first, rather than read the PDF and ruin the surprise. It's a unique experience to hear your characters as you hear them.)

Anyway, thank you so much for sharing this with the world! I know you put a ton of work into it, and I appreciate all your effort.

Thank you,

Laura

> i really wish i’d read the book before the major re-writing.

Oh, Daren's backstory was only ever in my notes. The longer version of Prophet was mostly just a lot more rambling. The pacing was a little more organic, but it wasn't a better book.

I did get tired of censoring. When I wrong Cowry Catchers, I said, "This is not for kids" and I went completely off leash. If you want to hear a more uninhibited Panamindorah story, stick around for that one.

For characters... Hmm. I can tell you that mostly they are _not_ direct derivatives of anyone I know. I often Myers-Briggs type them once I know them well enough to do that. This helps me keep them behaving consistently. My world has an over-abundance of "N's" because I am one.

wow, that's quite a backstory. if you ever decide to take votes, i vote for leaving Ermina as a schizo invention. It makes Daren significantly more *holy shit* scary, but I can see why you would edit that out of YA novel. i really wish i'd read the book before the major re-writing.

it would be very interesting to hear about your inspirations for your characters and how you developed them.

Hey, Sarah.

Yes, Daren, like many criminally insane ego-maniacs, is more unpleasant than interesting. Rquar, on the other hand, shares some of his cousin's personality, but minus the insanity, which makes him more interesting.

On a side note: the girl that Daren is in bed with before he goes chasing off after the Raiders (Ermina) was intended to be a total invention of his schizophrenia. She's not real. She's a sort of mental reproduction of his sister, who was murdered by his father when they were both children. His adult mind reinvents her as a lover. None of this made it into the edited novel, because it just wasn't relevant. It wasn't suitable for a young adult audience, and I wasn't interested in making Prophet into a truly adult novel. That bit of back-story would certainly have made Daren more three-dimensional, though.

I may decide to make Ermina into a real person and use her in a future book, or I may have Rquar or someone else mention some of Daren's issues in a later novel. I don't know. We'll see.

Anyway, thanks for dropping by. :)

That's good to know about Raquar - his character seemed to have more depth (not sure that's the word I want) than Darren, but his appearances were so brief.

Thanks, Jeff (I'm not sure whether you're Jeff-I-know-in-RL or another Jeff). The Architects were partially Hughes's idea. I brainstormed with him when I was re-writing the book, because I didn't like the dangerous-but-mundane sequence that occupied their place in the original. He suggested the Fates and then I said, "Who would the Fates be if they were male?" and one of us came up with Magi, and then somehow Plato got into it, and so on and so forth.

Thanks, Alex! I'm glad that the mood music seemed to come at a logical point in the story (rather than the-place-Abbie-decided-to-try-something new). :D One wonderful thing about podcasting and releasing your own work is that you get to play. Listeners don't seem to ding you for not having the absolute consistency expected in a pay-for product.

Hi Abigail, I really like how the story shifts from an adventure with relatively little magic involved to a story that heads towards a magic battle. I think it was the absolutely right time to introduce mood music to the podcast, as this episode (especially the second chapter) - at least for me - marks the transition explained above. Well done! Alex

Just listened to episode 5 of book III, and I must say, the mood music you used was brilliant, it added a great deal of atmosphere and seemingly drew me into the story! Excellent work!

Thanks for taking the time to do this story! And like Ms. Schwab said, Have a wonderful day :)

Hi, Harry. Book III will be up on Podiobooks as soon as I have the first half post-produced. I need to be able to put up the first 3 chapters at once and then commit to a weekly release schedule. But, yes, it will be there soon.

Ah, yes, that is a "Blue" snowball - a mic favored by podcasters. I was told by someone at podiobooks that I would get best results by hanging in upside down at about eye level, and this does seem to be the case. Most of the breath sounds go under it, and the rest are blocked by the pop filter. It looked even funnier when I was using pantyhose on a cloths hanger as a pop filter, but I finally decided that $30 was not too much to pay for a real filter.

Finding a place to hang the mic where I could record without too much reverb was another problem. I finally settled on hanging it from the dinning room light and putting a chair on the table as a reading stand. I also hung quilts on the walls. This seems to be the best arrangement in my available space.

Ha ha!! The chatter in this feedback episode is great. It sounded like you and Hughes has quite a lot of fun recording this, which made it all the more fun to listen to. Actually this is one of the few feedback episodes I have enjoyed listening to.

Also, I love the mic! I have never seen one like it and it is hanging by wire! A feat worthy of MacGyver!

Again, thanks for the time you have given us all.

Ha! Yes, hair dryers are over-rated as food warmers. I actually started taping a sign to my podcasting table for a while that said, "Turn the refrigerator back on!"

Warm soggy food up with a hair dryer. Well it worked well enough in my college days...

Thank you for your responses, guys! I really appreciate your feedback, and I'm so glad you're enjoying the story. :)

My impression is that people are divided on what they prefer. I'm thinking that for my next project, I'll probably used SSF in my own feed with the expectation that those listeners will be tuning in week-to-week. When I'm finished, I'll post the book(s) to podiobooks.com without SSF with the expectation that those people will be listening straight through. Then it's available both ways.

Again, I appreciate your feedback.

Hi Abigail, first of all: Thank you for Prophet of Panamindorah - I really love it!
I am listening to a lot of podiobooks/audio dramas and am a fan of SSFs. If you listen to 10, 20 books and have about a week to three weeks in between episodes it is really hard to catch up with the story otherwise.
So - as you don't like spoken SSFs you could at least consider to write a short one into the description of the episode. Or a short summary of the current episode - this really helps with getting into the story again. Just my two cents... Cheers, Alex

Thanks for your vote! I personally dislike SSF. No offense to people who are using them, but they always cause me to scramble for the fast-forward button. However, a listener recently emailed me to say that my plot was complex enough that he was becoming confused and wanted a recap at the beginning of each episode. I can understand that, especially if people are listening week-to-week, so I thought I'd ask for a vote. Prophet has the most complex plot line of any story I've written. I don't think listeners will have the same problem on the next one, but it's still nice to know what people prefer.

Just as an FYI to listeners, the story lines have reached their maximum distribution at this point, and they are starting to come back together. Characters will be re-united and a bunch of questions answered in fairly short order.

I would suggest to leave it out. When people go back to relisten to the story or when people know the book is done chances are they will main line it...(Listen to one episode after another) Then the SSF and previews get in the way...Good for the initial run of the podcast not so good after the book is complete...
